Why Bob Goodlatte Is Untouchable

Our post below about winners/losers generated a lot of comments. One of the discussions taking place in there was whether or not Goodlatte was vulnerable. An anonymous commenter has posited that Perriello beating Goode in the 5th and Mark Warner's strength prove Goodlatte is beatable. Here's what that poster is missing.

John McCain won the 5th (Goode) by 2%.
John McCain won the 6th (Goodlatte) by 15%.

Mark Warner won the 5th by 30%.
Mark Warner won the 6th by 17%.

In the 5th, Goode got 50%.
In the 6th, Goodlatte got 62%.
(I realize these numbers are less relevant because Rasoul was a chump)

These numbers are not a coincidence. The 6th Congressional District is the 2nd most "Republican" District in Virginia (behind the 9th) and is about 12-15% more "Republican" than the 5th.The punchline is that you can go get the best candidate you can find, Mark Warner can spend 6 months campaigning in the 6th, you can raise $10 million and you still won't beat Congressman Goodlatte.
